Reflecting on this year, which I had planned to spend doing 60 new things for my 60th birthday, it didn’t quite go as planned. Nor for anyone else. That said, I did new things which made me think that I have been living an alternate version of the 12 Days of Christmas, the version where the numbers don’t sequence and in my own way I have exceeded my target of 60!
This is what 2020 brought for me
- 1 speeding ticket
- 1 Covid test
- 2 parent deaths plus 2 lifetimes’ worth of schmatta
- 3 cancelled trips
- 4 Botox treatments (medicinal not cosmetic!)
- 4 Fracture Clinic visits
- 5 broken bones, all in one go
- 6 weeks in plaster
- 119 books read
- 23 jigsaws completed
- 0 funerals
- 1000 km clocked up on an indoor static bike
The year may have featured partridges, French hens, turtle doves and calling birds but my eyesight is not good enough to spot them. There may possibly be 5 gold rings somewhere but I haven’t found them yet.
I am fairly sure that there were no geese a-laying, swans a-swimming, maids a-milking, ladies women dancing, lords a-leaping, pipers piping (unless they were in the Thames Water van) nor drummers drumming in my ‘hood. However, they may have been staying home, protecting the NHS, saving lives, washing their hands or possibly masked and socially distanced from me.
